One of the worst decisions the Labour government made in home affairs, driven by opportunistic political reasons rather than national benefit, was to allow the police to join a trade union.
Apparently, event the prison security staff at the Corradino Correctional facility are unionized, and they are with the General Workers’ Union. There’s also an interesting aspect to this phenomenon which is an added and unnecessary power factor in the prison hierarchy: the related union heads feel entitled to have a say in the management of the prison. These are Theo Vella who is in charge of the union’s security and law enforcement section, and Helenio Galea who is the shop steward at the prison facility.
Helenio Galea and Theo Vella are in regular discussion with the Ministry’s liaison officer Nigel Vella over the prison management and Helenio Galea even had some disagreements with Svetlana Muscat. Prison CEO Chris Siegersma seems to have some issues with Helenio Galea, and the union, apparently, is not happy about this. Nigel Vella is acting as a mediator.
I find this situation incredibly hilarious, although only temporally given our country is not benefiting from this unseriousness. The government is run by a criminal organisation, yet it can’t even manage a prison.
