Israeli parliament overwhelmingly rejects Palestinian statehood

Yesterday, the Israeli Knesset has voted overwhelmingly in favour of a resolution proposed by  Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s party-in-government to reject the establishment of a Palestinian state. The reason provided for the rejection was that Hamas would be in a position to take over the newly formed Palestinian state.

68 members including centrist opposition figures Benny Gantz and Yair Lapid voted in favour. Only 9 voted against.

The vote goes against the current position of the US administration which is vying for a two-state solution. Benjamin Netanyahu is set to travel to the United states to address Congress next week.

Opposition Leader Yair Lapid is currently accusing Netanyahu of being unable to reach a deal with Hamas over the remaining Israeli hostages and should resign in effect.
