Rumours of Xi Jinping’s bad health are continuing on Chinese social media as articles and footage of Xi Jinping in Chinese media have decreased by more than 70% compared to the usual since the last Central Committee’s Plenary Session, according to research by Jennifer Zeng.
Xi Jinping has been rumoured to have suffered a stroke during the Communist Party’s Central Committee Session with searches of the word “stroke” on Chinese search engine Baidu spiking as a result. Days later he was seen at the Vietnamese Embassy in Beijing with footage of him taken from a distance.
China is going through an unprecedented economic crisis with rising unemployment figures, a real-estate crash and a rapidly slumping economy, although the government is making efforts to hide the true nature of the crisis.
