Why would Supreme Leader Robert Abela nominate his previous chief of staff, Glenn Micallef as European Union Commissioner? This is not a parting gift. The position of EU Commissioner is too valuable to be wasted on frivolity.
Glenn Micallef is part of Robert Abela’s continuity plan for the Labour Party. The plan is to raise Glenn Micallef’s political profile in Malta by making him an EU Commissioner, and then have him return to local politics as a Labour Party MP. Robert Abela is doing this because he needs friends in Labour after he doesn’t remain Prime Minister, and Glenn Micallef is Robert Abela’s friend. Glenn Micallef thinks that he is sacrificing a lot by conjuring up these plans to become a Labour Party politician.
Robert Abela’s plan to make a politician out of Glenn Micallef will not work as predicted. Glenn Micallef is associated with an administration that was responsible for multiple crises, most notably, and currently, the crisis of our electric grid. In addition, it’s not as if Glenn Micallef is going to be appointed Transport Commissioner and will have any political clout. He will be relegated to a peripheral commission. Helena Dalli was completely forgotten in Malta after she took the Equality Portfolio.
Glenn Micallef may very well be to blame as to why Malta may get another peripheral commission. Being inexperienced, and coming from a government that is actively and directly undermining the rule of law, Glenn Micallef shouldn’t be trusted with the staff kitchen let alone with a commission. His plan to raise his political profile will backfire in a messy way and he will be remembered simply as an incompetent leech.
It’s silly how people forgot so quickly. Labour seems to have forgotten that Therese Comodini Cachia burned her political career when she insisted to stay in Brussels instead of taking a seat in the local parliament. The Maltese don’t look too kindly on those who insist on going to Brussels to avoid their local calling. I can’t imagine any case scenario in which Glenn Micallef’s political profile is to be raised after he goes to Brussels.
The position of EU commissioner should have been used by Malta to uplift its reputation internationally, conduct serious international politics and raise our profile along with our soft-power. Instead, we are heading for another embarrassment.
At the end of the day, Glenn Micallef may not even come back to Malta to follow Robert Abela’s wishes. He is going to get a six-figure salary which he can use to basically do many things outside politics. At the end of the day, Glenn Micallef is one of the architects who wrecked our nation and rule of law under Robert Abela, and now he is getting promoted for it.
