I haven’t been up to date with what’s going on at Nurmengard Castle given I was out all day in the city yesterday, but news that Supreme Leader Robert Abela held a meeting with Jason Micallef and Alex Agius Saliba may make sense.
Robert Abela wants to avoid any Labour Party fissures going public, so putting the lid on Joseph Muscat’s challenge against him by, once again, appeasing him, would once again solve the problem (temporally). It’s a bad gamble, of course, because in electoral terms, Alex Agius Saliba will have a similar effect as that of Jason Micallef on the Labour Party, and this is what makes me highly doubtful that Robert Abela would be eager to support Alex Agius Saliba as a Deputy-Leader contender.
Yet, Alex Agius Saliba does have leadership ambitions in the Labour Party and he may very well attempt to fulfill them. This may not necessarily a bad thing for Labour in the long-term as his new position as Deputy-Leader would serve to peak his career and kickstart his downfall. In the scenario that Alex Agius Saliba wins a Deputy-Leadership race, (after amendments to the statute to allow him to contest), he would also most probably be handed a Ministry to form part of the cabinet.
So far, Alex Agius Saliba has trash-talked his way through local politics by saying any outlandish thing without suffering any consequences for it: this is the privilege only a Member of the European Parliament can have. Once Alex Agius Saliba is given a ministry and his true nature is revealed to the public, his political career will come crashing down just as Miriam Dalli’s did. Eventually everyone will learn what a total dumbass he is.
This is also the inevitable conclusion for Alex Agius Saliba because he does not intend to spend his life in Brussels. He thinks he is much better than that, but reality will hit him really hard when for the first time in his life he will be faced with actual adult responsibilities.
Note, that this is just speculation on a possible scenario. The bottom line is that Alex Agius Saliba is a liability for the Labour Party. Not only is he supporting and campaigning for Joseph Muscat’s rehabilitation, his political ideas are more consistent with the far-right than with the individuals of his same generation. He’s like a bad business which loses money for your group, but one which you can’t get rid of, so your management in its regard is focused on restricting its losses.
