“Banker of the Poor” Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus named interim head of Bangladesh government

“Banker of the poor” and Nobel Laurete Muhammad Yunus has been appointed head of the Bangladesh Interim Government following a revolution lead by students that ousted the dictator Sheikh Hasina. You can find a biography about him here.

There are sporadic acts of violence, anger and retribution against former regime supporters and officials and also Hindus, but these cases of violence are isolated.

The majority of students who lead the protest movement are peacefully collaborating with the authorities, organising the country, securing places of worship, organisign traffic in the absence of traffic police, and some students and protest leaders have also communicated signs of forgiveness to their previous enemies who wanted to kill and repress them.

Up to 1000 people were killed and another 9000 detained during the revolution.

Khaleda Zia, a political dissident and opposition leader who was arrested by the regime has been freed. Bangladeshis in Malta had been calling or her release.
