Khalifa Haftar’s supporters fall short of MPs in ousting the Libyan Government of National Unity from power

The political situation in Libya has returned to the same old impasse, as 50 Libyan members of the House of Representatives signed and voted for a memorandum ousting President Abdul-Hamid Dbeiba and the Government of National Unity from power, naming Osama Hammad as Prime Minister. Osama Hammad is already serving as acting Prime Minister. The memorandum als0 named the Speaker of the House of the Representatives, Ageela Saleh as Supreme Commander of the Libyan Armed Forces.

The memorandum which was welcomed by the Libyan National Army was rejected by the incumbent President Abdul-Hamid Dbeiba saying that it is just a political stance and doesn’t change the reality on the ground. The Libyan House of Representatives is currently made of up to 170 members.

Libyan Prime Minister Osama Hammad, who is supported by Khalifa Haftar, was also in Egypt in recent days for meetings with Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly. The Tripoli government expelled two Egyptian embassy officials prior to Hammad’s trip to Egypt, amid increasing rivalry between Tripoli and Cairo as Egypt continues to bolster Khalifa Haftar’s authority in Benghazi.

Meanwhile, Khalifa Haftar’s forces have kept augmenting their units in various locations and have also been spotted heading to the Hamada oilfields in South of Zintan.
