Scum lawyering by Franco Debono

Count on scum lawyers to intimidate and gaslight victims in order to save the worst elements of our society. Here’s Franco Debono defending his pimp-clients, yesterday in Court over a human-trafficking case by seeking his best to extract information about victims who are yet to testify in Court.

The victims are South American women who were human-trafficked to Malta for prostitution. 9 suspects are being accused of human-trafficking including two well-known pimps.

The snippets are taken from here and here, respectively.

Mark, as much as I love your news outlet and never miss an article I do not agree with you on calling lawyers names for doing their job.

If you had said how this ego maniac was given 24/7 protection while women killed by his clients were left to fend off for themselves, that makes him scum to my mind. But hes not scum because he was hired by scum to defend them. Thats his job and their right and its his duty to do the best job he can of it.

Thats the system and the best we have since possibly the birth of democracy in European Greece.

good luck getting a payment from a criminal unless you are a lawyer. Lawyers are a money laundering machine. Prove me wrong.

    2. Even lawyers who defend criminals are bound by the law and legal representation must work within it. The question we need to ask is whether or not Debono is working within the prescribed law and/or whether he uses legal loopholes to defend what is essentially a grievous wrongdoing.

Life is fundamentally shaped by the choices we make, and some paths are inherently contradictory. It is highly questionable for a criminal lawyer, after spending a decade defending individuals within the criminal justice system, to suddenly pivot towards a career in politics and position themselves as a champion of justice and the rule of law. While everyone has the freedom to choose their profession, the integrity of such a transition is deeply concerning. To defend those accused of wrongdoing for years, and then seek to enforce justice from a political platform, strikes me as disingenuous. I find it difficult, if not impossible, to place my trust in a politician with such a background, and I strongly encourage others to critically consider the implications of supporting someone with this kind of professional history.

I agree with you. I actually go beyond what you say. The Minustry of Justice and the Ministry of the Interior should not be placed in the responsibility of a legal practitioner. Sooner or later he will have to back to that profession to earn his living. Vested interests and conflicts of interest ought to disqualify such legal practitioners from those posts in the same way that a doctor should not be responsible for health services. The success of Louis Galea as Minister for Social Policyand Health under PN administration is an illustration of what I mean.

So, allow me to ask a pertinent question. When a lawyer of the calibre of Dr. Debono asks his client for a payment, let’s say ?20,000, can he get paid in cash? from crime money? Is this not tantamount to money laundering?
Imagine for example I got rich selling cocaine and I get arrested and charged. Dr Franco takes my brief and I owe him a hefty fee. All my wealth is dirty money. How does the good lawyer get paid?

Anti-money laundering subsidiary legislation prohibits the payment in CASH / CURRENCY NOTES for the purchase of goods and services in excess of Euro 10,000 by way of one payment or a series of linked transactions, even if a VAT receipt is issued. Such payment/s constitute an offence. An EU Regulation agreed to by the European Parliament in January of this year and that will shortly come into force perfects and enhances the earlier subsidiary legislation.

What really gets me is the picture of Franco Debono and his two colleagues with that other piece of scum Lilu King walking out of the Court building, all smiling from ear-to-ear after Lilu got off the hook because the police botched up on a technicality.
