One of my favourite photos from the War

The photo shows the Dockyard Defence Battery with a Bofors anti-aircraft gun. These men participated in the toughest and most gruelling fights in Malta against the Nazis given they were positioned in the highest priority target for the Nazis: the Admiralty Dockyard. The Grand Harbour and the Dockyard experienced their first hell in 1941 when the Nazis tried to sink the HMS Illustrious.

Malta downed up to 357 German fighter planes and 175 Italian fighter planes with many of the Germans being elite fighters from the Fliegerkorps X.

Malta also served as a launchpad to attack German and Italian shipping to Africa costing Italy its merchant fleet and disrupting Hitler’s plan for Africa.

The DDB. These dockyard volunteers manned anti-aircraft guns in the most perilous positions, to defend the ships and the naval dockyard. I wonder if there are any more documentation or photos of this unit, in the archives of the Dockyard. I made enquiries, years ago but got no feedback. It might reveal more, about this brave unit, whose story has never been told, except passed by word of mouth from one generation to the other.
