Malta has a relatively high rate of femicides in the EU coming third in the list in 2018 with a rate of 1.7 femicides per 100,000 inhabitants, according to the European Institute for Gender Equality.
The rate seems to change dramatically, partly due to the small population. One murder has a statistically significant impact and equally a tangible effect on a small community.
There was one murder of a woman by her partner in 2020.
There were at least three cases of femicides in 2022.
In 2023 Pelin Kaya was murdered by a man who deliberately drove onto her.
