Like most diplomats worldwide, Maltese diplomats are posted to a country for a number of years before being reassigned elsewhere. The tenure for many diplomats is coming to an end soon, and new postings are already being planned. This is what I have gathered from a diplomatic source so far, though these positions have not yet been confirmed.
Rome. Rome is considered to be Malta’s most important diplomatic post and it is to be handed to Daniel Azzopardi, who is currently in Madrid.
Madrid. Emmanuel Mallia, who is currently in London, is earmarked for Madrid but he may have objections from the Spanish government. More about this with a story following this article.
Berlin. Marlene Bonnici, currently Malta’s Permanent Representative to the EU, is being earmarked for Ambassador to Germany. She is a German speaker and has a German husband and has already moved there.
EU Permanent Representative. Neil Kerr is being touted for this role but there is still some controversy about his appointment given that he had several disagreements with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He is currently Malta’s Head of Cabinet at the European Commission under Commissioner Helena Dalli.
Ankara. The Maltese Ambassador to Turkey has been recalled back by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and is to be replaced by Marisa Farrugia. She is currently Ambassador to Poland.
Lisbon. Rosette Spiteri Cachia, former Secretary to President George Vella, is slated to replace another former Presidential Secretary, John Camilleri in Lisbon.
New York.ย Helga Mizzi, former diplomatic advisor to George Vella and former Director-General at MFA is being slated forย New York to replace Vanessa Frazier.
Vanessa Frazier. No news so far about one of Malta’s top diplomats, Vanessa Frazier.
