Olaf Scholz confirms press reports on halt of Ukrainian aid despite German Federal Office denials

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has confirmed last week’s German press reports that his cabinet is considering a halt to all new aid to Ukraine. The admission came despite the denial by the German Federal Foreign Office. The press reports previously claimed that the German government will halt all new aid because Ukraine will be given a ย€50 billion loan to buy weapons. The loan is backed by Russian Central Bank confiscated proceeds and is part of a new collective EU-initiative.

The Financial Times has issued a report that the objection to new aid to Ukraine has come directly from Olaf Scholz and his Finance Minister, Christian Lindne, however a disagreement within the parliamentary coalition and cabinet about this decisions still remains.

ย€50 billion is just slightly less than half ot the total annual Russian military budget for 2024. Surely, there will be little interest by the Ukrainians to pay it back given it will be backed by Russian confiscated proceeds.

    Fifty million euros may sound like a lot but it is roughly 0.0003% of the European Union’s Gross Domestic Product this year. And the European Union is not even paying for it but financing it through seized Russian money.

    As a percentage of the Group of Seven’s GDP, the amount is even more pitiful. The EU is an (eighth) member of the G7, so the G7’s GDP far exceeds that of the EU.

    The West fools around pretending to support its supposed ally with ineffectual sanctions, aid which turns out to be less than it seems, and lots of bluster and rhetoric, while Russia and Turkey show us how it’s done by putting boots on the ground and drones in the air for their own allies.

    If the West ultimately throws away the civilisational progress that the Allies of World War II fought so hard for 80 years ago, it will be due to an unwillingness to fight and to make sacrifices. When you lose the will to fight for what you claim to believe in with all that you’ve got, you cede ground to those who are willing to fight for what they believe in.

    Universal values may die because Western governments don’t want to make their people feel uncomfortable. Meanwhile, China, Russia, Iran, North Korea and other companions will be more than happy to fill any military vacuum created by the West, and they have no problem making their people (and everyone else) feel uncomfortable.
