For the sake of our national security, Byron Camilleri has to resign

Byran Camilleri is my friend, or was my friend, judging by the fact that we haven’t spoke to each other for years. On a personal level, he is known as humble, not corrupt and very sensible.

In politics, he has earned himself the record of the worst Home Affairs Minister Malta has had in at least thirty-seven years and I don’t say in a hyperbolic sense.

Under his tenure as Minister of Home Affairs, Byron Camilleri has compromised our national security by granting Maltese citizenship to alleged collaborators of the Russian Security Services, brought tremendous dysfunction in the Police Force, allowed widespread impunity for Labour Party organized criminals, refuses to extradite Libya warlords who made a killing selling drugs in Malta, not to mention the case of Jomic and Marzia Calleja Maatouk. All the while, journalists are being attacked by Chinese Ministry of Defense sanction hacker groups. He is also refusing to extradite Alberto Chang and has destroyed our relationship with the Chilean government as a result.

The man has zero concept of national security and is totally unfit for purpose. The recent ID card scandal should have ended his career once and for all, but he is dragging on to power whilst compromising further our national security in the process.

The man has been a disgrace as Home Affairs Minister and the country deserves much better: at least a decent sense of national security which so far is totally inexistent in the criminal discourse of this Labour government.

Basically, he is dragging down the country into new lows, day after day, leaving the nation ever more vulnerable to organised crime and hostile foreign security services. It’s time for him to leave, as soon as possible. A bipartisan parliamentary committee should be set-up to discuss national security matters in confidence. Grow up. This is not a joke. Running the country is not a game, but very serious business.

This situation is a serious matter. Malta has become a pariah nation and we have done nothing to stop these criminals from destroying our country.
