Donald Trump is refusing to debate U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris again after their first and only debate last Tuesday.
Trump gave a poor performance compared to his previous Presidential debates with President Joe Biden and even with Hilary Clinton in 2016 when he patronised her and projected a sense of male dominance over her. Clearly, Kamala Harris did not allow Donald Trump to ridicule her and constantly pushed back against him with authoritative stares. The prosecutor inside her came out in full force as she projected a strong sense of control.
Trump made some strange comments about illegal immigrants eating cats and dogs and stealing people’s pets. The issue is related to voodoo religion that is practiced by third-country nationals. Although this is indeed a reality of some Haitians and even Africans, it’s not pervasive in the US nor in Europe, and the allusion is clearly racist.
Kamala Harris attacked Trump on his stance over abortion, and on healthcare Trump replied he had “concepts of a plan”. Harris also stated that she and her Vice-Presidential nominee Tim Walz are gun-owners and are not against American citizens owning guns.
On Israel and Gaza, Kamala Harris stated that everything should be done to ensure the release of the Israeli hostages as soon as possible, while Trump attacked her for “hating Israel” and said that if Kamala Harris was President Israel would cease to exist.
One Russia and Ukraine, Trump said that he wanted the war to end; a Russian talking-point implying that Ukraine should cede land and capitulate to Russia. Kamala Harris reiterated her support for Ukraine to win the war against Russia.
