Ever since I remember, the pseudo-intellectual and demented academic Simon Mercieca has always been a gifting fraud. I was his student when I sat for my history bachelors at the University of Malta.
Basically, Simon Mercieca’s lectures consisted of forcing students to collect birth-records for him from Parish archives. This is rudimentary and basic stuff that one learns at college level and not at university where you are supposed to learn to transcribe much more sophisticated documents. I got to understand the difference in sophistication and academic rigour in the teaching of paleography and classical languages given that parallel to my history course, I sat for a Near Eastern study course, that although being my secondary choice subject, its academic rigour and volume was equivalent to a main subject.
Basically, students are doing Simon Mercieca’s research for free as he accumulates parish records which he uses for his own research by unsuspecting university students.
Simon Mercieca has the full support of the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and the Head of the Department of History on this, Dominic Fenech. Both of them are very supportive of each other.
