The Nationalist Party has so far been unreactive to the Labour Party’s unsurprising announcements that it favours “discussions” about abortions, after repeatedly scuttling proposed amendments that would have improved women’s safety and increased access to birth-control services.
Abortion will be Labour’s new issue to attract the moderate and young electorate during the next general election. However, if the Nationalist Party maintains its current pace, it intends to skirt around this issue by being passively opposed rather than actively against it A better idea would be to give MPs a free vote and ensure that it has election candidates that represent the pro-choice camp, otherwise, staying silent about this issue may not necessarily mitigate Labour’s advantage in this regard.
The Nationalist Party risks losing a significant portion of the electorate in the next election if it doesn’t compromise on its more conservative views. Ultimately, this could undermine its entire effort to enter office. The Labour Party knows this and this why it will put a lot of its energy in trying to exploit this weakness in PN.
