Israeli diplomats at the United Nations have insisted that a ceasefire in Lebanon would only be agreed to after Israel’s concludes its goals, mainly to push Hezbollah in the north and force it to abide with its peace agreement with Lebanon of 2006. According to the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, Hezbollah had to withdraw from the southern borders of Lebanon and be replaced with the Lebanese Army and United Nations Peace keeping forces.
Hezbollah has neither retreated nor disarmed in southern Lebanon and has used the region as a base to launch rocket attacks against Israel. Israel probably intends to push Hezbollah as far back behind the Litani River.
Israel is currently conducting an air-campaign against Hezbollah targets in the south of Lebanon.
