A Home Affairs Minister for the Theatre

It seems that Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri has rushed to amend the Criminal Code, ensuring that prison sentences for assaulting police officers will be mandatory, with no possibility of a suspended sentence. This amendment has come after the publicised incident of three individuals assaulting two police officers.

The Labour government is quick to react to press events to participate in political theatre, but having no serious policies and motivation to lead the nation Labour can only govern by being reactive.

If the government was serious, the police force would be in a much better state, not to mention that a comprehensive reform of the Criminal Code in favour of victims is something a Labour Party in government should actually pursue. Under consecutive Nationalist administrations, the Criminal Code was amended with a bias towards the defendant, resulting in many victims of various injustices today being left without remedies or justice from the legal system. This will be soon a missed opportunity because the Nationalist Party, being traditionally the party of and for criminal lawyers will be less motivated to make these changes in the Criminal Code.

To be factual, the Nationalist Party is in favor of the current government’s amendment, however it has yet, never pronounced itself on the issue whether the Criminal Code actually has a bias towards the defendant or the victim.
