Why is it hard to relinquish control?

Replying to a question by Times of Malta journalist, Malta Laurenze Zammit, Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri declined to say whether he is ready to relinquish control over wiretapping by the Malta Security Services. The question was made in relation a sentence issued by the Constitutional Court earlier this week that, consistently with previous judgments, condemned the Minister’s overreach over wiretapping decisions.

There is strong reluctance by the Labour government to relinquish this power, and the reason is obvious: the government would lose one of its methods of staying informed about ongoing investigations and individuals suspected of crimes. This genuinely worries those in power because, suddenly, the authorities would have the means to catch them by surprise–something they currently lack.
