Egypt and Eritrea back Somalia against Ethiopia

Eritrea’s President Isaias Afwerki  hosted Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in Eritrea’s capital Asmara and concluded their summit with a public statement pledging that the will uphold and respect the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of the nations in the region.

The three nations, which all have disputes with Ethiopia, have been collaborating closely together in their disputes against Ethiopia. Egypt is challenging Ethiopia over its control over the Nile vie the Grand Renaissance Dam, while Somalia and Eritrea both have border and other issues with Ethiopia. Both Egyptian and Eritrean forces are currently in Somalia to assist it against Ethiopia. The three parties are in turn also fueling a civil war in Ethiopia.

Egypt also signed an agreement with Somalia pledging it to help it reform its public institutions and its army.
