The saga of the mayor (or the lack of them) of the Birkirkara Local Council is an excellent representation of the rapid infantlisation of Maltese politics. Basically, the councilors can’t get to agree on who gets to become mayor and the local council is now dysfunctional with a petty village war between them. To make matters worse, it’s not just that PN and Labour won’t collaborate between each other, it’s also that the Labour councilors, mainly Yana Debono Grech and Kaylocke Buhagiar, who left Labour to contest the elections independently, are fighting between each other.
PN got most votes but Labour and PN got an equal number of seats. Yana Debono Grech got the highest number of votes at 1805 votes but PN councilor Desirei Grech who got 1802 votes is becoming mayor because PN got the highest number of votes. Yana Debono Grech is not having it and still wants to be mayor and blames Kaylocke Buhagiar for her missed opportunity.
This was hilarious if it wasn’t sad because it is the result of the increased infantilisation of Maltese politics brought by the Labour Party. The imposition unto society of young and inexperienced young people in positions of power for the sake of glossy and glamourised propaganda campaigns of the Labour Party.
