Lebanon’s Prime Minister Najib Mikati in diplomatic row with Iran over its interference in Lebanon

Lebanon’s Prime Minister Najib Mikari summoned the Iranian envoy in Beirut after Iran’s speaker of parliament, Bagher Ghalibaf said that Iran is ready to negotiate with France over the implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701. It is unusual that Lebanon challenges Iran’s interference in Lebanon which it is able to control via its military proxies such as Hezbollah.

Meanwhile, Lebanon’s parliamentary speaker Nabih Berri said in an interview with La Repubblica that Lebanon is ready to take control of the southern border with Israel along with UNIFIL following a ceasefire with Israel. This position follows the recent stance taken by the Prime Ministerย who has been demanding an end to Israel’s airstrikes.

Italy’s Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, is currently in Lebanon and is the first European leader to visit Beirut since Israel’s invasion of the country. While in Beirut, Prime Minister Meloni condemned Israel’s attacks on UNIFIL troops.
