A man held in the Forensic Unit of Mount Carmel Hospital has been arrested in connection with the death of 54-year-old Jesmond Gatt (Ix-Xemx).
The arrest followed a tip-off from the Correctional Services Agency, where the man reportedly confessed his involvement in the homicide to an officer.
Gatt was admitted to Mater Dei Hospital in critical condition last July after an incident involving two others at the Forensic Unit. A magisterial inquiry was launched, and ongoing police investigations have now led to the suspect’s confession.
The accused is currently being held at the Floriana police lock-up and will appear before Magistrate Nadine Sant Lia in court today, Tuesday, charged with Gatt’s murder.
