Budget 2025: Nationalist Party and Labour Government spar over Malta’s future in Budget debate

On Monday, Opposition Leader Bernard Grech outlined the Nationalist Party’s (PN) vision for Malta, promising a “government of quality” focused on the realities and needs of the Maltese and Gozitan people.

• Grech emphasised transparency, strengthening state institutions, and preventing poverty, with a future-focused approach to job creation and education.

• PN proposes a government accountable to its citizens, prioritising justice, media freedom, and the economy serving people–not vice versa.

• PN criticised the Labour Government’s recent budget, describing it as lacking direction, transparency, and adequate solutions for issues like poverty, healthcare, and infrastructure.

• Shadow Minister for Finance Graham Bencini highlighted the national debt exceeding €10 billion, projecting rising interest costs that could burden future generations.

• PN claims the budget fails to address declining quality of life and Malta’s competitiveness.

In his reply on Tuesday, Prime Minister Robert Abela defended the Labour government’s commitment to social mobility and investment in Maltese families through tax cuts, aiming to leave more money in citizens’ pockets.

• Abela criticised PN’s previous policies as “austerity-driven” and contrasted them with Labour’s approach of consistent social investment.

• Prime Minister insisted Labour’s budget measures aim to improve income for families, support the elderly, and promote economic growth, particularly through incentives for middle and lower-income households.
