President of Malta concludes successful visit to London to support Maltese patients and strengthen UK ties

The President of Malta Myriam Spiteri Debono recently returned from a productive visit to London, where she observed the work of the Malta Community Chest Fund (MCCF) and other organisations that support Maltese nationals in need of medical treatment abroad.

During her time in London, President Spiteri Debono was accompanied by MCCF officials who provide comprehensive assistance to patients throughout their medical journey–from initial diagnosis to their stay in London and eventual return to Malta. The support network aims to ensure that Maltese patients receive optimal care while undergoing treatment overseas.

The President’s visit included a meeting with Maltese patients and their families currently receiving treatment in Sutton. She also visited the Great Ormond Street Hospital and St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, where she met with hospital leadership and a range of healthcare professionals, including Maltese neurosurgery specialist Mr. Kristian Aquilina, who focuses on neuro-oncology.

President Spiteri Debono witnessed firsthand the work of various entities dedicated to ensuring that Maltese patients in London access top-quality services. Her itinerary also included a visit to the site of new apartments under development by Puttinu Cares, situated near hospitals where Maltese patients receive treatment, offering them and their families much-needed accommodation during their time in London.

In addition, the President met with High Commissioner Emanuel Mallia and staff at the Maltese High Commission, where she was briefed on efforts to deepen cultural and commercial ties between Malta and the United Kingdom.

The visit concluded with a networking event organised by the Malta Tourism Authority, aimed at showcasing Malta’s rich history and culinary heritage. In her remarks, President Spiteri Debono expressed appreciation for the ongoing efforts of various agencies that work tirelessly to promote Malta’s tourism appeal abroad.

This visit marks a continued commitment to supporting Maltese citizens receiving care abroad and fostering closer diplomatic and cultural relationships with the UK.
