A new rift is forming within the Labour Party, one that has previously gone unnoticed by the political pundits and regular “opinion-writers” in the press.
Prime Minister Robert Abela does not have a very good relationship with his Finance Minister and it is just because the Finance Minister has been challenging him regularly on many issues and aspects of his governance.
Finance Minister Clyde Caruana has leadership ambitions and these ambitions are being forged in a political environment riddled with lethargy and fatigue.
Currently, the only clear and likely alternative to incumbent Labour Party Leader Robert Abela is Foreign Minister Ian Borg. Many within the Labour Party assume that Ian Borg will be the automatic and most preferable choice for future leadership succession.
However, as pointed out in my latest book, Ian Borg is not necessarily trusted by many Labour Party activists due to his ambiguity with regard to previous premier Joseph Muscat. Clyde Caruana has made it clear that he has leadership ambitions and is also being encouraged by various activists who don’t see eye to eye with Joseph Muscat.
