Florida Congressman and previous military consultant to Vice-President Dick Cheney, Mike Waltz will be replacing Jake Sullivan as the Whitehouse’s National Security Advisor. Jake Sullivan leaves behind a legacy of appeasement toward Russia, having been the architect of U.S. restrictions on military aid to Ukraine, which prevented its use for strikes on Russian soil.
Mike Waltz previously criticised current US Secretary of state Anthony Blinken for failing to enforce Russian sanctions and disallowing Ukraine to use US weapons on Russian soil. There is yet no indication he will be pushing the Whitehouse to pursue these policies.
As for the appointment of CIA Director, Donald Trump is to appoint his former Director of National Intelligence, John Ratcliffe. Previously, Ratcliffe attempted to cover up Trump’s alleged collusion with Russia by releasing a disinformation document produced by the Russian intelligence services in 2016. The document falsely claimed that Hillary Clinton’s campaign planned to link then-candidate Trump to Russian interference to distract from her own controversies, such as the email scandal.
Both Mike Waltz and John Ratcliffe have been very vocal supporters of Israel and criticised the Biden Administration for trying to place constraints on Israel’s war on Gaza.
