Turkey blocks Israeli President’s trip to COP29: Al-Monitor Reports

According to Al-Monitor, Turkey has refused permission for the Israeli President’s aircraft to enter its airspace, ultimately leading him to cancel his trip to COP29 in Azerbaijan. President Herzog was scheduled to fly to the climate change conference via Turkey, but Turkish authorities refused entry to his aircraft.

Last week, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan announced that he intends to cancel relationships with Israel following his repeated condemnations of Israel’s ethnic cleansing in Gaza. Despite Turkey’s advocacy for Palestinians, it is simultaneously engaged in a war against its Kurdish minority.

Theย 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference, or COP29 was held in Baku, the capital city of Azerbaijan. It hosted world-leaders, government ministers and energy executives to discuss climate change and the green transition. Azerbaijan has an economyย  that is fully dependent on gas and oil exports.
