Malta is preparing to host the OSCE Ministerial Council on 5th & 6th December in Ta’ Qali – the largest ministerial conference ever held on the island. State delegations from 57 nations will take part in a discussion about a range of important global concerns, including conflict resolution and human rights.
However, in a statement published today, Arnold Cassola drew attention to some of the serious inconveniences that the event will create for local businesses and schools, such as San Anton School, which will close for two days.
Cassola also shared concerns raised by a gym in Ta’ Qali. The management of the gym stated that the compulsory three-day closure due to security reasons will incur losses of tens of thousands of euros in revenue, with no compensation offered. Attempts to seek support from the authorities were dismissed, with officials merely suggesting clients use other gym locations–a response the gym described as “unrealistic.”
Arnold Cassola criticised the lack of dialogue with affected businesses, calling it a clear example of authorities trampling upon small enterprises during major national events.
