As Poland prepares to assume the presidency of the Council of the European Union, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola visited Warsaw to meet with Polish leaders and emphasise Poland’s important role in shaping Europe’s future. President Metsola met with a delegation of party leaders from the European Parliament, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and members of the Polish Government, Senate and House of Representatives.
Metsola spoke during a meeting with Prime Minister Tusk and pointed out that Poland’s EU Presidency comes at an important moment for the EU. She said: “Europe is at a crossroads, and now is the time to show leadership.” She also expressed Tusk’s assertion that “the era of geopolitics is over,” emphasising the urgent need for Europe to prioritise its security and independence.
“Security means being less dependent on others – whether it’s the source of utilities or the security of electricity,” Metsola said. “Eliminating the fragmentation of the single market and improving connectivity in energy markets are important steps to reduce costs and maintain Europe’s competitiveness. This is one of the challenges our industry faces today.”
Metsola linked these concerns to the European Parliament’s broader priorities, including strengthening European competition, cutting red tape and supporting businesses, families and farmers. She said these goals were crucial to building a stronger and more united Europe.
The visit also gave Metsola a platform to showcase the growing political climate in an election year. Despite these changes, she stressed that the “constructive pro-European center” remains a strong force in the European Parliament.
President Metsola also attended a conference organized by Polityka Insight and spoke with business leaders, politicians and diplomats. Her speech focused on strengthening cooperation and innovation to overcome the challenges facing Europe.
As Poland prepares to take over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, Metsola’s visit highlights the importance of leadership, cooperation and resilience in meeting Europe’s most pressing challenges.
