New University AI project to enhance swimming performance

The University of Malta’s Department of Artificial Intelligence, part of the Faculty of ICT, has unveiled an ambitious research initiative, Project DIVE (Data-driven Intelligent Video Evaluation). This groundbreaking venture accordingly aims to harness the power of artificial intelligence to revolutionize training methods for competitive swimming.

The project is being led by Dr. Vanessa Camilleri, in partnership with the Aquatic Sports Association of Malta (ASA), Project DIVE focuses on developing AI-driven tools. These can analyse swimming performance through video footage. These tools will deliver real-time feedback, enabling athletes and coaches to refine techniques and enhance performance.

Innovating at the Intersection of Sports and AI

“Project DIVE represents a significant step forward in combining sports science with artificial intelligence,” explained Dr. Camilleri. “Our goal is to create smart technology that not only optimizes swimming techniques but also reduces the risk of injuries caused by improper training practices.”

The project has secured โ‚ฌ80,000 in funding and is set to run for 18 months. It will focus on building AI systems capable of recognising various swimming strokes also providing a detailed breakdown of swimming mechanics.

Collaboration and Impact for swimming excellence

The initiative will also involve close collaboration with experts from ASA, local swimming coaches, and athletes to ensure practical and impactful solutions. The resulting technology is chiefly expected to transform how swimmers train and prepare for competitions, giving them a significant edge in performance.

Beyond its impact on sports, Project DIVE also aligns with Malta’s strategic goals of fostering technological innovation and advancing excellence in athletics.
