A petition signed by 281 lecturers from MCAST yesterday was formally submitted to the Prime Minister’s office, as well as to the Ministry of Education, MCAST management and MUT.
The petition which was started on 12th November 2024, demands immediate action to resolve the stalemate over a collective agreement that has been expired for over three years.
MCAST lecturers protested the lack of a collective agreement on 2nd October 2024 at MCAST to which the Ministry of Education had yet not replied publicly nor privately. The agreement has been pending since 2022 .
Yesterday the document was presented by hand to Joe Filletti, Head of Secretariat at the Ministry of Education. It highlights the lecturers’ growing frustration with prolonged delays in reaching a new agreement. The educators have expressed concern that the current working conditions no longer reflect their critical role within the education sector.
Despite their dissatisfaction, the lecturers emphasised their solidarity with the MUT in striving for improved salaries, benefirts and working conditions. They urged greater transparency and collaboration among all parties involved to reach a resolution that is fair, sustainable and in line with standards set in other educational institutions.
In the petition, the lecturers highlighted also the pressing need for updated provisions that reflect today’s educational demands. “Our goal is to ensure that lecturers receive the support and recognition they deserve to continue providing the highest quality education for our students”, said a spokesperson for the lecturers. “This situation has dragged on for far too long, and we are calling for all parties to come together to find a solution that is appropriate, fair and timely.”
The lecturers expressed hope that the petition will act as a turning point in the negotiations, urging swift and decisive action from all parties. They emphasised that mutual respect and cooperation are essential to concluding the overdue agreement.
