On the 50th anniversary since Malta became a Republic, 20 individuals and organisations were recognised for their extraordinary contribution to society during the Republic Day honours ceremony. The event took place yesterday at the Presidential Palace in Valletta, and awards were given by the President of Malta Myriam Spiteri Debono.
Nine people were appointed to the National Order of Merit, the highest civilian honour in Malta, while 10 others, including an academic institution, were awarded the Medal for the Service of the Republic. The honours recognise those who stand out in various fields, from the public realm to the arts and health care.
This year, two individuals were made Officers of the Order, while seven were selected as Members. No appointments were made to the two highest degrees of the Order–Companion and Companion of Honour. In the same way, no honours were given for the Society in Honour of the Republic or the Medal for Bravery.
Highlights from the awards
Dr. Joseph F. Grima, historian and prolific author, was recognised for his important contribution to the history of Malta, while Dr. Joseph Zarb Adami, consultant in anaesthesia, was honoured for his work to improve the standards of medical care at Mater Dei Hospital. Among the Members of the Order, the poet Prof. Daniel Massa was celebrated for his literary achievements, Dr. Narcy Calamatta for the development of the film and theater sectors, and Prof. Charles Scerri for his work to establish dementia care and research. The Medal for the Service of the Republic recognized personalities such as veteran journalist Reno Bugeja, the Archbishop Emeritus of Albania George Anthony Frendo, and the young activist who died recently Jake Vella, whose work in favour of physical activity inspired many even though he was battling a rare condition.
The Mediterranean Academy of Diplomatic Studies was also honoured for its contribution over the years in the training of diplomats from countries around the Mediterranean region.
