President Macron names Francois Bayrou as Prime Minister: to propose a budget to the Legislative Assembly

President Emmanuel Macron named previous Justice Minister, Francois Bayrou as Prime Minister following the resignation of Premier Michel Barnier, who resigned after a vote of no-confidence. His first task will be to ensure to pass on the budget legislation for next year which the Opposition is challenging with regard to the rising deficit.

Prime Minister Francois Bayrou is the President of the Democratic Movement and previously President of the European Democratic Party. He is a strong Europhile and supporter of the European Union having once described it as the greatest construction of all time. Members of the far-right Opposition, National Rally, criticise him for giving up France’s sovereignty to the EU. Earlier last month, he said in a TV interview that he is committed to serve his country until the end.
