The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, participated in the commemorative ceremonies of the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge, the last major German offensive on the Western front during the Second World War.
In a moving ceremony held at the American Cemetery in Luxembourg and in Bastogne, Belgium, Metsola paid tribute to those who sacrificed their lives to ensure freedom in Europe.
Also present were King Philippe of Belgium, Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg, and Prime Ministers Alexander De Croo and Luc Frieden. Metsola thanked the veterans for their sacrifices, recalling that the EU is built on the values of freedom and hope, obtained thanks to the courage of the allies who fought against tyranny.
The Battle of the Bulge, also known as the Ardennes Offensive (December 1944 – January 1945), was a crucial battle that involved more than 700,000 Allied troops. This difficult battle, known for the extreme weather and heavy losses on both sides, was essential to ensure the victory of the Allies over the Nazis.
