A 43-year-old Colombian pleaded not guilty to the charges related to the dismembered body that was found in a suitcase in the sea in Gzira. The accused, Andres Leonardo Gamboa Duran, was charged with hiding a corpse, tampering with evidence of a crime, being involved in a criminal organization, drug trafficking, possessing cocaine not for personal use, and money laundering.
The case came to light on 9th December, when two minors saw a suitcase in the sea and, with the help of others, found a body inside it. The victim, a 50-year-old Colombian, was found wearing just an adult nappy, with his hands and feet cut off and placed in a bag in the same suitcase.
From Police investigations, it was found that the suitcase was bought a day before from a shop in San ฤ wann, where the cameras showed Gamboa Duran buying the suitcase and an axe.
The accused was arrested at his home in Msida. In Court, the Prosecution explained that the accused confirmed in his statement that he was involved in the case. The Defense did not ask for release from arrest, and the Court ordered that his assets be frozen and that he remain in custody.
The case is being heard by Magistrate Marseann Farrugia, with the Prosecution led by Inspectors Kurt Zahra and Wayne Camilleri, with the assistance of lawyers Kaylie Bonett and Dejan Darmanin. Yanica Barbara Sant is defending the accused.
