Environmental group Moviment Graffitti yesterday morning held a press conference in the Tal-Bebbux area of Żurrieq, together with residents, to express their objections against a controversial development proposal that involves the construction of a supermarket, a garden center, and a parking facility on land designated as ODZ.
The developer says the supermarket would be “underground,” implying minimal impact, but Moviment Graffitti said the project would still turn a rural area into a commercial zone, encroaching further on Malta’s diminishing countryside. The project would also involve the destruction of agricultural land to make way for the garden center and parking lot.
Activists underlined that Malta does not need more supermarkets or commercial ventures of this kind, especially at the expense of agricultural zones in ODZ areas. They called on the public to strongly object to this proposal by submitting their concerns to the Planning Authority.
Objections can be sent via email to representations@pa.org.mt, quoting the application number PA/07684/24 in the subject line.
Moviment Graffitti vowed to continue the fight against this development, referring to it as a “shameless attack” on Malta’s rural heritage and environment.
