In a warm Christmas message to the nation, the President of Malta Myriam Spiteri Debono appealed for the Maltese people to take hope and courage and to reflect on the path which their country had followed and would follow in the coming years.
This speech came within an unprecedented year-one marking 60 years of Independence, 50 as a Republic, and 20 since Malta joined the European Union. The President underlined that these historic events formed milestones in Malta’s development to what it is today and invited the public to consider how these anniversaries stand as a base for further progress and unity.
A Nation for Peace and Security
Special emphasis was given by President Spiteri Debono, who signalled Malta’s stance in respect of being a peace-loving nation, at a juncture when global conflicts are raising the bar especially between Ukraine and the Middle East. She reaffirmed Malta’s commitment toward peace, security, and prosperity and called that Malta should promote such values at an international level. She also referred to Malta’s current presidency of the United Nations Security Council and the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe, proof of strategic foresight with which Malta is addressing global challenges.
Youth and Sustainability to the Fore
The President expressed her expectation to see Malta host the forthcoming Ministerial Conference on Youth, the first in over a decade. She has insisted on engaging and empowering the young generation who are at the forefront of sustainability and innovation. “Sustainability means democracy cannot do without it,” Spiteri Debono said while urging citizens to take concrete actions toward environmental protection with a view to future prosperity for subsequent generations. She encouraged such projects that balance economic growth with ecological preservation, enabling one to leave a very good legacy.
Moving Ahead with Compassion
While commending Malta for low unemployment and a good civil rights record, the president yet took pains to note that it is still suffering from poverty and social inequality. She asked that everyone practice empathy and solidarity, committing each person to do a day’s work towards the needs of people who are less fortunate than one’s self: “Malta’s progress must consider the wellbeing of all its people.”. As citizens of Malta and Gozo, we must play our part by showing compassion and working together for a better tomorrow,” she said.
A Message of Gratitude and Service
President Spiteri Debono concluded her address by expressing gratitude to the Maltese public for their warm welcome since her appointment. She conveyed her best wishes to the community, including foreigners living in Malta, while promising to serve the country with dedication. Her message encapsulated a vision for a united, resilient Malta that keeps building on its rich history toward a sustainable and inclusive future.
