With police being more present in the flow of traffic and carrying out checks all over Malta during this holiday period, no serious traffic accidents occurred on Maltese roads during Christmas and the New Year. These coordinated efforts, which included over 170 road checks, ensured enhanced safety on the island’s roads during this busy period.
These controls were not only carried out in the name of maintaining traffic rules but also in order to prevent possible abuses during the holiday period. The overwhelming majority of drivers did not break any rules, but measures were taken right on the spot against the rest, and more than 400 fines were issued between 22nd December and New Year’s Eve.
Key Violations and Enforcement Actions
Offenses included drivers without any licenses, driving while using mobile phones, and not buckling up. Some of the vehicles were towed impounded due to the driver’s failure to show a valid license. Additionally, speed gun checks resulted in over 85 fines for excessive speeding, while police dogs and breathalyzer tests uncovered 11 cases of drivers over the legal alcohol limit.
Counter Education and Continuing Operations
Police distributed some fliers for responsible driving and reminded them of the risks from drinking and driving. These were placed on parked cars, part of the wider awareness campaign.
A police spokesperson explained that these inspections were being carried out as a collaborative effort of the Malta Police Force and Transport Malta officials. “They will not stop after this festive season but will also continue throughout the year as part of our endeavor to have safer roads both in Malta and Gozo.” Police thanked the public for its cooperation, which contributed to a safe and incident-free holiday period.
