Last weekend, the table football Yorkshire International Open unfolded in England, showcasing intense competition among elite athletes, including four Maltese representatives who delivered commendable performances.
George Ebejer emerged as the standout performer for Malta, navigating an exceptional tournament run that saw him reach the semifinals of the prestigious event. Ebejer’s journey included a remarkable 4-2 victory over Maxime Rairoux in the quarterfinals. However, his campaign came to an end in the semifinals, where he fell narrowly to the eventual champion, Remi Soret, in a tightly contested 1-0 match.
Josef Camilleri also put up a strong showing, successfully advancing from his group. Unfortunately, his run was cut short in the barrage stage, where he was eliminated by Rairoux.
Young table football talent on display
Meanwhile, young talents Thomas and Gabriel Ebejer showed promise with solid performances. Although they did not qualify from their Open category group stages, both reached the quarterfinals of the consolation tournament. Thomas Ebejer also made significant strides in the Under-20 category, reaching the semifinals. There, he faced Noah Denne, the eventual winner, and bowed out after a hard-fought 2-1 match.
The participation of these athletes on the international stage is made possible through the support of SportMalta and the Maltese Olympic Committee. These entities continue to invest in the development and success of Maltese sports.
The Maltese contingent’s achievements in Yorkshire highlight their growing potential and commitment to representing Malta with pride on the global stage.
