US President-elect Donald Trump was given an unconditional discharge in his New York hush money case with no jail time, fines, or probation. That is less than a week before his swearing-in, freeing him to take office without legal hindrances.
In May, Trump was convicted on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in connection with the $130,000 payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels for her silence about an alleged affair before the 2016 election. The judge, however, gave him an unconditional discharge because the sentencing burden was slight, and any issue that might have arisen from trial could be briefed on appeal.
The constant denials of Trump characterised the case as a “witch hunt.” And he says that he is going to appeal, claiming presidential immunity. However, attorneys explained that the cited immunity cannot concern the personal actions Trump had committed long before the beginning of his presidential term.
This is the first time a U.S. president will enter office with a felony conviction, but the sentence makes certain there will be no immediate consequence for his forthcoming term. The Supreme Court rejected a request to block the sentencing, with Chief Justice John Roberts joining the liberal justices in allowing the sentencing to go forward, as did Justice Amy Coney Barrett.
