Spanish Minister for Foreign Affairs José Manuel Albares travelled to Syria and met with Syria’s leader Ahmed al-Sharaa. The Spanish Minister inaugurated the opening of the Spanish embassy and posed for pictures in Sednaya Prison.
Despite these photo opportunities by foreign dignitaries, which are mostly meant for public consumption, Syria remains diplomatically even more isolated than it was under Bashar al-Assad. The European Union refuses to lift sanctions on Syria pending government reforms and assurances on rule-of-law.
The only countries currently trading with Syria and offering unconditional support to the new government and its reconstruction efforts are Turkey and Qatar. Previously to being deposed, Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad was being rehabilitated diplomatically by the Arab League and some European states including Italy.
