Transformative Week for Motorsport in Malta

This week, from Monday, January 13th, to Sunday, January 19th, marks a pivotal period for the Malta Motorsport Federation (MMF). The federation welcomes officials from the Fรฉdรฉration Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) and the Automobile Club d’Italia (ACI) to Malta. Their visit is dedicated to delivering specialized training and development initiatives, aimed at elevating the standards of motorsport across the island.

Enhancing Safety in Motorsport

A key focus of the week is the renewal and updating of safety plans for the National Hillclimb Championship. This crucial step reaffirms MMF’s commitment to ensuring the highest levels of safety for participants, officials, and spectators alike.

Specialized Training Programs

Several targeted training courses are being conducted throughout the week:

  • Scrutineering Course for Karting: Led by ACI scrutineer Giuseppe Nunziante, this program is designed to train local Karting scrutineers in line with international standards.
  • Stewards and Race Directors Training: ACI and FIA experts Gianluca Marotta, Alessandro Ferrari, and Valerio Brizolari are overseeing courses for stewards, clerks of the course, and race directors. These sessions are open to both seasoned officials and prospective candidates, equipping them with the skills and knowledge required to officiate motorsport events effectively.
  • Medical Management in Motorsport: Dr. Francesco Petrucci and Dr. Max Girgenti, members of the ACI and FIA medical teams, are conducting training for local doctors. This program focuses on motorsport-specific medical protocols to enhance emergency response capabilities during events.

Certification and Progression in motorsport

The training culminates with a three-day course, running from Friday, January 17th, to Sunday, January 19th. Participants, including two local FIA-certified stewards and several prospective officials, will undergo exams on Sunday. Successful candidates will receive certifications as:

  • Clerk of the Course for Circuit and Hillclimb
  • Race Director for Circuit, Hillclimb, and Karting
  • Stewards at various levels

Future Opportunities: Gaining Global Experience

Phase 2 of this initiative promises exciting prospects. Newly certified officials will have the opportunity to attend international events alongside ACI and FIA teams, gaining invaluable hands-on experience. This exposure will additionally refine their expertise and prepare them to contribute to global motorsport events.

Preparing for State-of-the-Art Facilities

The project, involving around 40 participants, is part of a larger effort to ready operational staff for Malta’s FIA-homologated facilities currently under construction, with additional facilities already in the planning stage. These developments, partially funded by FIA and SportMalta, underscore the island’s ambition to position itself as a hub for world-class motorsport events.

This week’s intensive activities represent a major step forward in developing a robust motorsport ecosystem in Malta. Additionally this will continue laying a solid foundation for the sport’s future growth on the island.
