European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the reopening of negotiations for the EU-Malaysia Free Trade Agreement as Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim embarks on a European tour.
The European Commission is striving to add on to the €45 billion in trade exchanged annually between the EU and Malaysia. Malaysia is also the EU’s third largest trading partner among the ASEAN group. The negotiations come as President Donald Trump threatens to introduce new tariffs with the External Revenue Service.
The European Commission claimed that this step strengthens EU-ASEAN partnerships, reinforcing Europe’s Indo-Pacific strategy.
