At the World Economic Forum in Davos, the Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs is urging European states to lift their sanctions on Syria. Foreign Affairs Minister Espen Barth Eide said that sanctions on Syria were imposed against the regime of Bashar al-Assad, and now that he has left, the sanctions should no longer remain in place. He added that the new Syrian government has done nothing wrong to merit sanctioning and that Europe should let Syria try to fix their country themselves instead of fixing it on their behalf.
French and German Foreign Ministers flew to Damascus earlier this month and met with Syrian leader Ahmed al-Sharaa to tell him that Europe and the European Union wouldn’t be lifting sanctions on Syria until they see a new political and governing set-up in Syria that guarantees rule-of-law.
The Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs Asaad Shaibani was also in Davos and was interviewed by the previous UK Premier Tony Blair. When asked what is Syria’s biggest challenge right now, the Syrian Foreign Minister replied that the removal of Western sanctions is the urgent priority to bring stability in Syria.
