Rwanda-backed M23 rebels announce capture of Goma city in the Democratic Republic of Congo

The Rwandan-backed M23 rebels have announced their control over the city of Goma in the North Kivu province of the Democratic Republic of Congo. They invaded the province last week and forced United Nations peacekeepers to withdraw after attacking them and killing up to 13 of their members.

There is calm in the city but thousands have already fled, however looters are currently at Goma’s airport.

Yesterday evening the United Nations Security Council issued a statement demanding the withdrawal of M23 and Rwandan forces from Goma and to halt their advance in Congo.
