Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo sign peace agreement in Washington

The Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda have signed a peace deal in Washington earlier today at the US Department of State followed with a signing by President Donald Trump at the White House. The preliminary deal was signed last April.

The peace deal was signed by Rwanda Foreign Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe and Democratic Republic of Congo Foreign Minister Therese Kayikwamba Wagner. Massad Boulos, a senior adviser to the White House on Africa and father-in-law of Tiffany Trump was also present.

During the signing ceremony at the Department of State, Secretary of State Marco said that:

“This is really why I wanted this job, or why I embraced this job, is moments like this. This is in essence the Department of State: the department of peace. It is designed to bring people together and uses its stature to bring people together. It helps make America stronger because it creates partners we can do business with. ”

The Democratic Republic of Congo is one of the world’s major exporters of mineral earths and President Trump seeks to sign a minerals deal with the DRC at an upcoming ceremony in Washington in July.

Earlier in January of this year, Rwandan-backed M23 rebels invaded the province of North Kivu of the DRC and threatened a fully-fledged war against the capital of the DRC, Kinshasa. In February, they proceeded to take over the South Kivu province. The peace agreement has not been published and it is unclear whether the M23 rebels will be withdrawing from Goma and the Kivu provinces.
