Swedish authorities seize Maltese-flagged ship in connection with latest cable sabotage

Swedish authorities have seized the Maltese-flagged bulk carrier “Vezhen” over the recent act of sabotage against a fibre-optic undersea water cable between Latvia and Sweden. Two other ships were involved in the incident, another one which is also carrying a Maltese flag.

The Vezhen bulk cargo carrier is owned by Hai Kuo Shipping 2015B, registered in Hong Kong, but the company is actually owned by the Chinese state-owned Industrial and Commercial Bank of China.

Yesterday, EU Foreign Ministers during the Foreign Affairs Council agreed on no retaliatory action over the sabotage act. This is the third sabotage act by Russia and China against European cable infrastructure in the recent months.
