On Wednesday evening, Syrian leader Ahmed al-Sharaa gave a victory speech after being appointed President of the Transitional Government by the Syrian military factions. The speech was not broadcast live but it was filmed by various media outlets including the Turkish and the Saudi Arabian public broadcasters. Al-Jazeera was also present and the Syrian government seems to have made an effort to exclude Western media from the event giving full exclusivity to other media outlets based in the region.
An agreement has been made by the Syrian military factions to hold elections in four years. President Sharaa will travel to Saudi Arabia as potentially his first foreign trip as President.
Yesterday, Qatar’s Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani visited Damascus where he was welcomed at the airport by President Sharaa.
The speech lasted only five minutes and you can watch it in full with subtitles below. Syrians were celebrating in the streets while President Sharaa gave his speech.
