The Nationalist Party is making the right call by requesting discussions with the government to reach a consensus on defence. Defence matters have traditionally been of sensitive importance, with consensus always being reached between the Government an the Opposition. Prime Minister Robert Abela disrespected this consensus during the last European Parliament election campaign as he used defence issues to attack European Parliament President Roberta Metsola.
Now, despite accusing the European Parliament President (our Maltese compatriot) of warmongering for being in favour of increased European defence spending, the Prime Minister is advocating for the same exact thing he opposed. This is not controversial and defence matters should never be abused again on the campaign trail. We have national consensus about increasing our defense spending and modernising the Armed Forces of Malta and both the Government and the Opposition should be able to work on this in harmony.
What’s contentious however, is the current Malta Security Service which has been captured by ex-Prime Minister Joseph Muscat and was never reformed while we society was more preoccupied with the previous Police Commissioner. It would be preferable if these discussions were held in confidence, but after failing and refusing to reform the Security Services, the inevitable debate will come up.
Malta needs a proper intelligence and security service with professional personnel and an intelligent leadership (it’s literally described as the “intelligence service” with a law designating it to do exclusively just that). It’s a sensitive entity which is directly related and responsible for the security of our citizens. It is not a playground for any kind of political partisan imbecile.
